The final chorus is genuinely excellent, and it's because of everything that came before it. After 20 minutes of chaos, hearing all of these opposing elements coming together to finally make something coherent is heartwarming. I imagine all these disembodied voices and instruments living together on some musical equivalent to the Island of Misfit Toys, very earnestly putting on a show for an nonexistent audience.

It feels like Francis Poulenc, Aneka, Tubular bells 2 period Mike Oldfield, Gwen Stefani and some others smashed together. Not that bad. Each segments could easily work as transitions between tracks some on progressive rock album, some on Vince Clark’s projects or elsewhere. Lack of unity and catchy melody makes it long to listen to, but clearly not that bad.

Listening to this epic work and reading the comments simultaneously is a surefire recipe for either brain damage or nirvana. It's a crapshoot but definitely worth it.

What really puts the cherry on top is the song's lyrics. It's an unhelpful critique of every negative aspect of American history and culture (romanticization of the old west, rabid consumer culture & commercialization of religion, anti-intellectualism, widespread & normalized unhealthy diets, genocide of native americans, don't think I even need to elaborate on the last section of the song) that doesn't suggest any way of moving forward and instead ends with a triumphant mock-celebration of all these things as if they're permanent sins that we will never truly erase. It laughs in the face of progress and tells us confidently that ignorance and bigotry IS and will always be America summarized. Truly the most unwanted song.

I heard this for the first time when i was on lexapro. One of the side effects of lexapro for me was daily nosebleeds. When i first heard the opera rap i laughed so hard that my nose started gushing blood. This song has done more for me than lexapro ever has.
